Opening the garden wall

Opening the garden wall

Opening the wall between the two gardens to provide access for vehicles to the soon to be constructed cartshed. Only 4 metres wide to preserve as much as possible; however, what was to be a simple post-Christmas task turned into a job beyond the scope of lightweight equipment. The wall was built too well! normal lime mortar should allow the bricks to be salvaged, here though, the mortar withstood all attack and the bricks failed first, perhaps only 10% salvaged. A hired jack-hammer was useless and I resorted to simply standing on top of the wall and swinging a 14lb sledgehammer. The final base of the wall even resists the hammer, never have I encountered such good brickwork. Built in about 1880.
